EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT FUND SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

INTRODUCTION

The Society for Underwater Technology (SUT), through its Educational Support Fund, will offer annual scholarship awards to either undergraduate or postgraduate students undertaking studies that embrace relevant component areas of marine science, underwater technology or offshore engineering. Applicants from other study areas are welcome to apply where they can demonstrate a clear interest in pursuing a career in a relevant Marine related area.

In 2010, the SUT Educational Support Fund will be offering two scholarships for fulltime students entering the penultimate or final year of their undergraduate course, or undertaking a postgraduate.

Applicants must be enrolled to study at a recognised Australian University and the grants are open to any student, irrespective of age or nationality.

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS

Postgraduate candidates should have a first degree in a relevant engineering or science subject, and have enrolled in a postgraduate course of study related to offshore
engineering, marine science or underwater technology.

Undergraduate candidates should have permission to proceed to their penultimate or final year of the BSc or BEng degree course.

Scholarship applicants must be in full time education, Applicants who are full time employed will not be eligible for the scholarship; part-time employment is acceptable.
Applicants completing their course in 2009/2010 would be required to be studying during the full 2010 academic year.

WHEN TO APPLY - Students wishing to be considered for an SUT sponsorship award should complete and return the application form by 22 March 2010. Late applications will not be entertained.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

The selection will be made on the basis of the information provided in the application form, the report from the Head of Department, and an interview of the short-listed candidates. It is important to ensure that all sections of the application are fully completed. Applicants will be informed of the outcome of the assessment before October 2009.

FINANCIAL

The Society’s Educational Support Fund will award sponsorship of $5000 for the 2010 academic year.

In addition to the financial sponsorship, SUT will provide student membership of the Society, will seek to facilitate an appropriate industry mentor for the student, and may help to facilitate relevant vacation employment in the industry, and attendance in relevant SUT professional development courses, for successful candidates.

SUT Scholars may apply for other sources of funding, and still be eligible for an SUT sponsorship

All SUT scholarship applicants are expected to join the SUT (which is free to students).

All scholarship applicants will have the opportunity to attend SUT evening meetings and courses at Student rates.
